The most interesting thing in the woods

As a dog walker I would say one of the first and most frequent questions people will ask me is “do the dogs ever run away?”

Yes they do!

I also get told by clients that their dogs are generally obedient but if they see something fun in the woods when they are walking with them, they lose their focus and ability to listen.

An unbelievably simple and yet easy way to mitigate these risks is the title of today’s blog.

You have to become the most fun and interesting thing on your walk.

Engage and connect with your dog. Play with your dog. Be present with your dog.

Number one rule is to not get lost and distracted by your mobile phone. Your dog will very quickly see that your attention is somewhere else and there is more fun to be had elsewhere.

As dog workers we have the benefit of other dogs to help create the fun. But we are also aware that whilst they play together they also run away together.

Another little tip for those of you with energetic dogs….. Throw stuff and play.

Our walks are high tempo and filled with flying objects. We bring the party to your dogs, and in so become the most interesting thing nearby.

The added bonus of this is both dogs and walkers tire themselves out. You do not grow if you do not push yourself.

So why not challenge yourself to become the most interesting thing on your dog walks? It’s certainly won’t work 100% off the time but you will get a much closer connection to your four legged family member.
