Navigation by Frost and Ice

At the risk of sounding like Robert Falcon Scott you can very much navigate by frost and ice patterns.

Now, this is not wanting to open up a debate on the issue, but I would propose the notion that Scott would have beaten Amundsen to the South pole had he not been a lover of dogs.

Amundsen used tactics which both PETA and Who Let The Dogs Out do not approve of. What happened at the Butchers’ Shop will always slightly tarnish the expedition in the eyes of dog lovers.

Unlike Scott, I have the advantage of Woods and the Flora to which the frost and ice sticks.

With this recent extreme cold weather we have had some fantastic frost and ice formations up in the woods.

And by reading them correctly you will be able to use them as a compass.

Any southerly facing slopes will have a lighter thin frost or be bare due to facing the sun. As the taller trees catch the Sunshine the warmth permeates downwards and thaws the vegetation lower down.

Whereas any North facing slopes will be in the shade at this time of year due to the low Sun ensuring a compound buildup of frost and ice….

Both are stunningly beautiful.

With snow forecast in the coming days it might be a while until we are treated to these formations again, so head out and make the most of seeing them.
