It has been lovely this week with some of the warm weather back again.
After a damp and grey July and August the woods are the perfect breeding zone for a plague of mosquitoes.
They are out in force and they are absolutely loving the conditions.
The warmer weather this week has meant it was very much back to thin layers and T-shirts. The major problem with this is that mosquitoes can easily bite you through these thin layers.
And so a few days ago I found myself in the comical situation of walking around in 25 degree heat in a thick hoodie, with the hood up.
And still you hear the high pitched whine and buzz as they approach. It is the sign to start waving those arms and hands about in a manic fashion. Rarely does this technique work.
I normally notice just as they have bitten me and then it is time … THWACK !!!
One dead mosquito in return for a few days of itching.
Now I think it is fair to say that I am folically challenged (balding). This means that I do not have thick, luscious hair atop my head to protect me. If I do not therefore either put a hood up or wear a hat, my scalp turns into an all-you-can-eat buffet for the mozzies.
There is always the temptation to apply deet to repel the mosquitoes. Simply put, it is not good for your skin or health…. especially if you would have to apply it daily for months at a time.
And so the annual ritual and slap dance continues.
As the quote goes “if you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a room with a mosquito”.
