Doorstep Adventures: The Old Quarry

I will admit that in my pre- dog walking days, adventure was something that needed to be planned.

Adventures were coordinated trips with a group of friends, maps and a destination normally at least a couple of hours away or by flight.

They would involve numerous days as opposed to even adventuring for just one hour.

With my advancing years and increasing responsibilities these epic adventures have needed to evolve.

Doorstep adventures are exactly what they sound like. You start from home, or very close by, and you make the most of the fantastic nature and experiences around you.

In this and a few upcoming blogs I will share a few of my own doorstep adventures hopefully inspiring you to go and make your own.

I would like to add that doorstep adventures are perfect to take along your four legged companion (dog). I very rarely leave my house without my border collie, Minttu, by my side.

So with that long, rambling introduction over let’s get on with the first of my doorstep adventures: the old quarry.

Within 500 m of where I live is the old Sogn Quarry and Mines. The Quarry and Mines have not been in active use since 1854.

Over the course of this time nature has started to reclaim the area. It is a vast area stretching from Sognsvann car park to Korsvoll.

What is now left over is a beautiful mix-match of topography and greenery. Stone terraces, rock pools and jagged formations hide between the abundance of trees, bushes and grasses.

Over the ages parents and children alike have built swings, camps, ziplines and areas to grill and barbecue. Whether sitting, walking, running or swinging it is a little hidden Paradise.

Here are a few photos from my pre-work walk with Minttu this morning
