Embracing Pessimism

Bit of a Friday thought provoking blog today.

Driving around today I was listening to a podcast where they talked about the benefits of pessimism.

As a natural optimist I was intrigued to listen further.

The basis for their argument was the formula

Frustration = hopes and expectations vs reality.

It got me thinking…..

It seems to mirror the stoic teachings of worst case scenario.

When something irritating will arise, imagine what the worst case scenario could be. Then you go on to analyze how you would cope with this worst case scenario. And ultimately you realize whilst it may be unpleasant, life would be ok.

So I ask the question, should we lower our expectations and hopes to therefore be more frequently surprised and overjoyed at the end result?

There is no correct answer and this will depend on everyone’s unique perspective.

But it is certainly worth giving it a go to see if it is something that you could incorporate into your life.
