Norway is a country with an absolute outrageous abundance of raw nature. From last Thursday evening until yesterday evening I had taken a long four-day weekend to head out exploring.
The trip was a belated 40th birthday adventure with three great mates. The last time we had been able to head out ski touring together was pre-covid pandemic. During that time we have amassed seven children between the four of us and it suddenly had become a little harder to just escape for mountain-based adventures.
We had rented a cabin up in a place called Storlidalen, about 35 kilometers west from Oppdal (about a seven hour drive north from Oslo). It is a Valley where we have explored together previously and we knew that it would be the perfect playground for varying levels of risk, fun and views.
It’s certainly did not disappoint, and every day was quite different from the previous.
It’s culminated in a very early Monday morning start so that we could reach the top of a nearby peak before 10 o’clock. Quite alone on our ski tour up, we were the only ones at the top of a sun-drenched and zero-wind peak with the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains.
Two days previously we had been thwarted on our attempt of another peak when the clouds and fog rolled in reducing visibility to only a few meters on what was quite a narrow ridge. We were only 20 minutes from the top but the wise decision was to abort, happy to not let the egos decide.
After 4 good long days in ski boots and skis attached climbing 700-1200m of altitude per day, I must say that my feet and legs feel extremely light today out in Oslomarka.
The four explorers were quite surprised to return to an Oslomarka with not much snow left. It was an excellent end to Winter, and very much feels like a one day shift straight into glorious sunny Spring.
