Onsdag 27 august – great walks, warm sunshine and 1 bad knee!

Hei og god onsdag

Håper dere har det bra!

Sol har kommet tilbake i dag……. and it was glorious weather!

About 10 days ago I (Matt) developed a pain in my left knee. Thinking it was just the usual aches and pains I took ibuprofen, voltarol and tiger balm whilst massaging it and stretching a lot. I could feel the quad muscle was tight and I was unable to bring my left leg right up to my gluteus muscles (bottom!). This has happened several times over the 2 years we’ve been dog-walking. Aches, pains and strains are part of the job. However by last Thursday morning my knee was very swollen. Luckily I have a physio friend who got me an appointment less than 1 hour later. They used ultrasound on the knee and drained 86ml of fluid out from above the knee (slightly uncomfortable). My knee moved freely again, I was told to rest, ice, compress and elevate it (RICE).

However, this is easier said than done when you have the responsibility for taking out dogs for toilet breaks and walks. Luckily Båndtvang had ended that very day (21 august), so I could walk slightly slower behind the dogs and throw sticks and balls for them on the Thursday and Friday. Then the weekend came and I spent around 50 hours lying with my leg up and icing my knee every 2 hours apart from sleeping time (though it was still compressed and elevated!).

Unfortunately it seemed the fluid was still building again in my left knee. This week I have hobbled, hopped and limped through marka, probably idiotically, foolishly but with no other agenda than to not let down my clients, but more importantly their dogs as they love their walks. I have been fortunate to pass off extra walks and dogs to Sandra this week which has reduced (literally) the load on my knee.

I have felt my knee has been getting better some days this week with less swelling, and then worse again a few hours later (not even necessarily after the walks). On my 3rd walks this afternoon I unfortunately fell, due to my knee, and as you would imagine, felt a sharp, strong pain shooting through the knee. Luckily we were nearly back at the van at the end of the walk, but I apologise for that the dogs had to wait for me as I very slowly made it back to the van. I have therefore had to book myself back into the physio tomorrow morning and I fear that I might have to rest (properly) this time for up to one week. I will of course update you all after I have been to the physio tomorrow.

I am assuming that I will not be able to take dogs for walks for maybe 1 week. I am currently working on solutions (step father, friends, etc to help cover) to ensure all dogs that need to be walked are catered for. Unfortunately some walks will be cancelled tomorrow and Friday, I apologise in advance to the owners and dogs and I will be in contact if this is the case.

Sandras turer

Sted: Maridalen

This afternoon we headed up to Maridalen to start our walk. The dogs were all very lively and they exploded from the back of the van… well apart from Sophie….. she had been riding up front with me, enjoying the comfy passenger seat, windows cranked down, air blowing through the dashboard….. therefore when I opened the passenger door to let her out, she looked at me as if to say “do i really have to leave this place?”. It was like a Spa centre for a dog, all pampered and lazy, sunning herself.

A biscuit got her out of the van though and she joined the others. Bali was already hunting out sticks on one side, with Junior doing likewise on the other. Cherie was 100 metres up the path, lying down and watching us very focused.

We headed along the langrenn path and came to a small bridge. With the heat all the dogs didn’t hesitate, even Sophie jumped in.

IMG_20140827_134353 IMG_20140827_125042

After a refreshing dip we carried onwards and upwards toward Mellomkollen. I was alternating directions in which I threw sticks to keep the dogs guessing, make them use up their energy and give me some extra time to hobble up the path.

We continued up and headed alongside the stream. The woods were deserted and apart from the noise of running, manic dogs it was very peaceful. We continued up and came to just under where the path splits. This was our cue to turn around and start heading back.

IMG_20140827_130129

As previously mentioned, about 250 metres from returning to the van, I slipped somehow (not entirely sure as we were on the langrenn track) and felt a sharp, shooting pain through my knee. Possibly my wake up sign to take this injury more seriously and get some rest.

Hilsen

Sandra og Matt
